From the beginning of the season, it was clear that the talented mix of experienced and young players at the disposal of head coach Bryan Bergougnoux had potential to finish at the top of the National 3 division. After going undefeated in the first 5 matches, the objective to finish 1st and gain promotion turned from promising into reality.
In the first half of the season, the offensive units were producing at an incredible rate, and Thonon Evian Grand Geneve were gaining points at an impressive rate. Striker Ilyes Chaibi found blistering form and reached the double-digit mark for goals scored well before the winter break. During the second half of the season, the team found its defensive stride, and they became increasingly dominant by winning a high rate of games.
From October, the team remained in first place and kept a distance from the competition. Throughout the season, players from the professional youth academy The ICEF were integrated into team practice sessions to gain experience. The value of having a close relationship between the pro team and the academy is two-fold, as it offers high-intensity football to the youth while providing fresh players for the professional group during training sessions and games.
Thanks to successful coaching decisions, a fantastic atmosphere amongst the players, strong support from the fans, and of course the solid displays on the field, Thonon Evian Grand Geneve clinched promotion to the National 2 league with 3 games to play. In the end, TEGG had the best offensive and the second best defensive record in the league. A testament to the hard work put in by all.
The final games left to play were marked by a grand celebration with the fans, team executives, staff, coaches, and players at the Stade Joseph-Moynat. With a successful 2021-2022 season completed, the team is now focused on reaching for the highest position next year in what is guaranteed to be a more challenging division with fiercer competition.
